Specifications

To provide an ultra-lightweight green roof system to establish green roof on existing rooftops.

Solution

VersiDrain® 25P water retention and drainage trays were placed directly over the RC rooftops, ensuring that individual trays overlap by at least one cell row.  A geotextile filter fabric was next laid to completely blanket the trays. Geotextile perimeter upturn of about 15cm is glued to the side walls.

EnviroMix PB, a growing media in the form of a lightweight planting board with high water absorbency and retention properties were next installed. Arranged in rows over the geotextile one abutting against the other without the need to affix, the planting board is extremely easy to install. They are also easily cut to fit into or around irregular areas on the roof.

Minimal regular loose media material is required. Only 50mm of appropriate soil mix (depending on plant species selected) was spread over the planting boards for in-situ planting of selected drought-tolerant plants to establish the green roofs on three rooftops at the Children’s Garden.  For planting of turf/grass, no additional loose media is required over the planting boards making installation much cleaner. Pearl grass was effectively used to create maintenance paths on the green roofs.

Vital nutrients incorporated into the board during its manufacture help support initial plant establishment whilst its high water absorbency and retention properties help to reduce irrigation frequency.  In prolonged dry spells the addition of an appropriate irrigation system helps to maintain and sustain the green roofs.

More than just helping the rooftops to aesthetically blend with the lush greenery of the gardens, the extensive green roofs complement existing solar panels on an adjacent rooftop to support environmental sustainability.  By providing an insulation barrier against the elements on the rooftops, the green roofs also offer protection for the waterproofing as well as reduce heat absorption.

Specifications

To provide pedestal system to support bearers for installation of timber decking on Enviromental Deck (E-Deck) and conceal services and pump system for water feature.

Solution

VersiJack® pedestals support the metal bearers beneath wooden panels for the installation of extensive wooden decking on Level 5 of the building. Unsightly services are hidden beneath the raised decking but are readily accessible for maintenance when required. Necessary adjustments for height were made with the screw and locking ring system in the pedestal creating a level surface for patients, visitors and loved ones who seek fresh air on the E-Decks.

Overseas Family School

Location

Paris Ris Drive 3, Singapore

Specifications

To provide support pedestal for installation of decking.

Solution

6,500 VersiJack® pedestals were used to support bearers for installation of the raised wooden decking on the rooftops of the two Academic Blocks of the school. VersiJack® pedestals allowed easy screw adjustments to be made to bring the pedestals to the required installation heights. Thereafter, Integrated Locking Rings on the pedestals were used to lock and secure the confirmed heights during and after installation.

The 1,994 m2 of decking created turned the otherwise wasted bare rooftops into additional amenity space for the student population and staff of the school, and will inevitably become the preferred outdoor venue where organised events and other school activities may be conveniently staged and carried out within the safety of the school’s compound.

The raised decking also serves an environmental role by providing an effective shield above the rooftops. This reduces heat and sound transfer from the rooftop to the classrooms below, reducing energy consumption for air-conditioning, related energy costs, and also the carbon footprint of the school. Consequently, they also help to mitigate urban heat island effect.

Specifications

To provide an extensive roof system to enable the establishment of an extensive green roof on the roof of the extension project of the French school of Singapore.

Solution

VersiDrain® 25P drainage and water retention trays were installed directly over the waterproofing membrane. Geotextile filter fabric was then laid over the VersiDrain® 25P trays and a planting media was spread on top for in-situ planting of selected plant species. Water retained by the water reservoirs of the trays during wet periods is returned to the planting media by capillary action during dry spells and drawn upon by the plants to sustain vigorous and healthy growth.

To provide the Green Roof System to enable planting on the roof of the house

Solution

The green roof system was placed on a structural concrete rooftop slab. VersiDrain® 25P, drainage and water retention trays, were installed on the roof and covered over with a geotextile fabric to enable a lightweight, nutrient rich formulated soil medium (by Code Green) with a maximum of 2.5 inch thick to be installed on the trays. The plants were propagated off site prior to the commencement of the construction allowing the plants to grow during this period. Various grasses, Sedums, Delospermas, and other succulents were hand planted on the roof, which is un-irrigated.

To provide pedestal support for installation of pavers at rooftop bar

Solution

VersiPave® supports the 600 mm x 600 mm pavers; eliminating the use of heavy bedding sand on the roof areas, facilitating rapid drainage of water from the paved areas. Each VersiPave® has individually adjustable integrated chocks which are used to ensure that paved surfaces are uniform and level. The air gap created beneath the pavers provide heat and sound insulation, hide miscellaneous services and also serves as a capillary break which prevents dissolved salts and minerals from migrating to the paver surface and form unsightly efflorescence.

Specifications

To provide green wall system for installation of two green walls

Solution

VGP Mounting Panels were installed onto two walls to facilitate mounting of VGP Trays, from floor to ceiling, two-storey high, at the main entrance hallway of the school and on a lower wall fronting the school’s assembly area. The mounting panel at the bottom right was installed first followed by the other panels of the bottommost row systematically from right to left. Subsequent panel rows follow above in the same sequential order. An automated irrigation system, consisting of a network of tubing and a control panel, was installed to supply irrigation to the individual trays at programmed intervals for pre-set durations.
VGP Trays were planted in-situ with selected pre-grown plants and hung 12 trays to a panel to create a dense and lush wall of plants instantly. Anti-lift arms were inserted into individual trays to prevent inadvertent dislodgment of the VGP Trays from their mounting points. The drainage outlets of the bottommost row of trays were connected to a horizontal base tube to allow excess water to be discharged without wetting the immediate area beneath the green walls.
The lush eye-pleasing green walls become instant living educational tools. They enable students of the school to learn that, for a very small ground level footprint, green walls are able to provide many benefits. They contribute to environmental sustainability, enhance aesthetics, improve health and wellbeing by providing a source of stress relief and escape from the demands of urban living. In the specific context of the school, these green walls offer an environment conducive to learning.
