HDB Car Park Roof @ 18 Holland Drive

HDB Car Park Roof @ 18 Holland Drive

Location

HDB Car Park Roof @ 18 Holland Drive – Singapore

Specifications

To provide the intensive roof system to enable the establishment of a landscape roof on the roof of the car park.

Solution

VersiCell drainage modules were installed to provide a drainage cavity beneath a geotextile filter fabric layer and the planting soil above. VersiCell with high internal void and an open surface design is able to rapidly capture and transport excess water, preventing the green areas on the roof from becoming waterlogged. The drainage modules also provide a protection layer for the waterproofing membrane, a root-resistant fully adhered layer of Evalon PVC/EVA terpolymer membrane, prolonging its serviceable life.
Both intensive and extensive green roofs were installed side-by-side on this HDB car park roof top making it uniquely attractive. Residents in the vicinity enjoy a cool and aesthetically pleasing green roof instead of a hot exposed concrete roof.
The green roofs mitigate urban heat island effect, keep surrounding ambient temperature down and reduce transference of heat to the car park level immediately below. Additionally, they also offer other environmental benefits, by acting as a chemical, biological and particulate filter, filtering stormwater runoff at source, and helping to alleviate downstream problems associated with heavy downpours.

Specifications

To provide the Green Roof system to facilitate planting on both regular low-slope reinforced concrete flat roofs and also large expanse of sloped Corus Kalzip profiled metal roofs in the park totalling 35,000 sq m.

Solution

Elmich Green Roof was chosen because the wide structural spans of the immense roofs to be greened, one of Asia’s largest, and fast track construction of the park demanded that the system selected must be light and easy to install.

Elmich Green Roof comprises a VersiDrain® 25P water retention and drainage layer, a geotextile filter layer and EnviroMix® GR, a primarily inorganic soil-less lightweight planting media and drought-tolerant plant species that require little or no maintenance.

For the metal roofs, VersiCell® structural drainage/insulation cells were used to fill the space between the metal ridges to create a flat level surface on which a separation sheet and geotextile filter fabric were installed. VersiDrain® 25P drainage and water retention trays were then installed on top and a filter fabric positioned over the trays enabling 100mm of EnviroMix® GR to be spread over the trays for the planting of selected drought-tolerant plants.

VersiDrain® 25P facilitates efficient drainage on the green roof. Water and nutrients stored in the cell network of the trays is returned, via capillary action, to the planting media during dry spells, sustaining healthy plants with minimal maintenance. An automated irrigation system was incorporated on the roofs for use during the initial plant establishment and also to deliver regular supply of water and nutrients to the plants.

Waterproofing for the concrete roofs is provided by a fully adhered layer of Evalon PVC/EVA terpolymer membrane, a root-resistant waterproofing membrane, also supplied by Elmich.

Specifications

To provide a secure decking support system and to reduce the structural weight on large outdoor terrace areas.

Solution

Supplied by Ken Hitchcock Designs and installed by 2 Construct, VersiJack eliminated the use of heavy masonry block work supports thereby substantially reducing the weight bearing load on the building structure. Another major advantage of VersiJack is that during the installation process, the membrane is not penetrated in any way. This reduces the long-term likelihood of hard-to-fix leaks occurring, which are traditionally very costly and difficult to access.

VersiJack is infinitely adjustable from 75-1000mm and incorporates a bearer support that accommodates even warped 40-80mm wide bearers.

Specifications

To install indoor green wall panels along the spiral stairway leading from the basement gallery to the building’s first storey.

Solution

Elmich Vertical Greening Modules (VGMs) were pre-planted in a nursery environment with plants suitable for indoor green wall installation. This ensures that the plants are firmly established and sufficiently pre-oriented to growing out of a vertical environment. The VGMs are anchored onto pilasters secured along the wall of the spiral staircase to form poster-like green wall panels.

A drip irrigation system is incorporated in the system and drainage trays placed below the base of the panels to collect and channel excess water. Artificial lighting, installed on the opposite facing wall and directed at the grren wall, provides the plants with adequate light for healthy plant growth.

The green wall poster-panels help to publicise the Housing Development Boards efforts in promoting the greening of Singapores public housing estates.

Marina Bay City Gallery – Singapore

Specifications

To provide two indoor green wall panels in the City Gallery, behind the reception counter and the Marina Bay table model.

Solution

Elmich Green Wall System was specified for this project. About four months before the system was scheduled to be installed, pre-planting using the Vertical Greening Modules (VGMs), geotextile bag and soil-less lightweight planting media was done at a nursery. This allows firm establishment and pre-orientation of specially selected indoor plants to a vertical format prior to installation. On site, the VGMs are secured in metal support frames and mounted onto pilasters fastened to the wall.

A drip irrigation system is incorporated in the system and a drainage gully installed at the base of the walls to collect and channel excess water. Artificial lighting is provided above the walls to provide the plants with an adequate source of light for healthy plant growth.

A distinctive design feature of the green walls is the flat beams on the walls that artistically connect the lines formed by the supporting pillars of the second floor. This creates a visual flow of lines between the first and second floors.
