Specifications

To provide the Landscape Roof system beneath planter boxes on the rooftops of the building.

Solution

1100 sq m of VersiCell sub-surface drainage modules were installed at the base of large planter boxes to provide a void beneath the planting media to enable expeditious transport of excess water to drainage outlets. A non-woven geotextile filter fabric was placed over the VersiCell modules before a 100mm sand layer was spread on top followed by the media for planting. The efficient discharge of excess water provided by the VersiCell drainage layer prevents the green roof planter boxes from getting waterlogged and ponding after downpours, supporting and ensuring healthy plant growth.
In addition to enabling environmental benefits associated with green roofs to be harnessed, the attractive rooftop greenery, is also enjoyed by occupants of the neighbouring buildings within University Town (Utown), and have played a part in the building being awarded BCA Green Mark Platinum which had in turn, helped the National University of Singapore, of which Utown is a part, to receive the coveted Green Mark Champion Award.
CREATE is an international research campus and innovation hub housing some 1,200 researchers within UTown and is home to a vibrant research community, including the National Research Foundation, interdisciplinary research centres from top universities and corporate laboratories.

ITE Headquarters & College Central

Location

Ang Mo Kio, SIngapore

Specifications

– To provide green wall systems to establish vertical greenery on the walls of eight campus blocks of the College up to a height of 35 m. (VGM®)
– To provide extensive green roof system to enable rooftop greening of three campus blocks. (VersiDrain®25P)
– To provide media retention web to enable all-around planting on eight cone-like concrete structures at the atrium. (VersiWeb®)

Solution

Green Wall

Elmich VGM® Green Wall system was used to establish 35 m living walls on eight campus blocks. The system comprises Vertical Greening Modules (VGM®) containing a geotextile bag filled with EnviroMix®GW (a primarily inorganic lightweight planting media) anchored onto stainless steel pilasters. An automated irrigation system delivers water and nutrients directly to plant roots to ensure healthy plant growth.

The green walls together totalling 5,300 sq m is the largest vertical greenery installation at a single development in the world.

Elmich VGM® Green Wall system is a highly engineered architectural living wall system utilising UV-stabilised plastic modules and stainless steel support brackets and pilasters that enable easy mounting and dismounting of VGMs during installation and maintenance. The system is certified to withstand wind uplift from various directions at 110km/h with no noticeable damage. Extremely versatile, the VGM modules were also easily adapted to accommodate the demanding design requirements of the project.

Extensive Green Roof

Elmich Extensive Green Roof system greened 2,400 sq m of rooftop space atop three campus blocks. VersiDrain®25P drainage and water retention trays were placed directly over the waterproofing layer on the rooftop and a geotextile filter layer was laid over the trays to allow lightweight planting media to be placed on top of the trays. Pearl Grass was selected for its heat tolerance and low maintenance. An automated pop-up sprinkler irrigation system was installed to ensure that a rich jade-green is sustained on the rooftops.

Slope Stabilisation

Eight pyramid gardens were erected in the atrium using VersiWeb®. The web panels were secured onto the eight structures using rebar anchors cast in the concrete. The cells were filled with planting media and a plastic mesh used to blanket the web to prevent media spillage. An automated irrigation system was installed to provide water and nutrients directly to the roots of the plants, whilst perforations in the VersiWeb® cell walls allow the water to infiltrate from one cell to another, providing drainage and avoiding hydrostatic pressure buildup.

Water-Play Fountain @ Clarke Quay

Location

Clarke Quay, River Valley Road, Singapore

Specifications

To provide the pedestal system to support pavers of water-play fountain at the focal point of Clarke Quay where four blocks of restored conservation warehouses converge.

Solution

Beneath the pavers, invisible to all, 500 VersiJack height and slope adjustable pedestals perform a crucial supporting role to make the water-play fountain possible at Clarke Quay.

A constant 4mm gap between pavers maintained by Spacer Tabs mounted on the pedestal tops allowed water issuing from the fountain spouts to seemingly disappear upon coming into contact with the paver surface, keeping areas beyond the boundaries of the raised paver area completely dry. The pump mechanism and required cabling for the pump as well as lighting are safely and unobtrusively hidden in the void space created beneath the raised pavers.

At dusk when the fountain comes alive with lights and colour, the easily identifiable water-play fountain, where the passageways of four blocks of the restored conservation warehouses at Clarke Quay converge, becomes a focal point for visitors to this historical riverside festival village dedicated to good times. Combining dining, shopping and the conservation of historical heritage, it is where Singaporeans and tourists alike can experience Singapore’s nightlife, enjoy a night out, and at the same time, take-in Singapore’s commercial history along the Singapore River.

The Singapore River became the centre of trade after the founding of Singapore in 1819. During the colonial era, Boat Quay, nearer the river mouth, was the commercial centre where barge lighters (bumboats) would transport goods upstream along the Singapore River to warehouses at Clarke Quay. At the height of its prosperity, dozens of bumboats would jostle for mooring space beside Clarke Quay, with the practice continuing well into the later half of the 20th century.

As part of conservation of buildings with historical significance in Singapore, and taking cognizance of the historical value of Clarke Quay, the warehouses at Clarke Quay were restored, preserving the historical character of the area. The warehouses now house various restaurants and nightclubs and a number of now defunct Chinese junks (tongkangs) and bumboats moored bankside along the Singapore River have been refurbished into floating pubs and restaurants, making Clarke Quay a unique hub of Singaporean nightclubs. Clarke Quay is also an access and drop-off point for river cruises and river taxis on the Singapore River.

Fashion Valley Mall, San Diego, California United States

Location

7007 Friars Road, San Diego, CA 92108, United States

Specifications

To provide the green wall system to enable the installation of a living wall at the Fashion Valley Mall in Mission Valley in San Diego, California, United States.

Solution

250 VGM® modules planted with over 4000 plants, pre-planted before installation in a nursery environment to allow firm establishment and vertical orientation, were used in the 75 sq m living wall. The VGM modules were mounted onto stainless steel pilasters secured to metal unistrut frame attached to the building. Besides allowing easy mounting and replacement of modules, when necessary, the versatile VGM® modular system also allowed modules to be arranged to create the attractive design patterns on the living wall.
Because pre-planting of the VGM® modules had allowed the plants to grow in so well, the plants already cover most of the pilaster and module sections immediately after the initial installation, creating an almost instant living wall.
The Elmich VGM® Green Wall is delighting shoppers and visitors to the Fashion Valley Mall, joining several other outstanding VGM Green Walls recently installed through Tournesol Siteworks, Elmich’s distributor in the U.S., including the Amazon HQ (in Seattle) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (in Texas).
The Fashion Valley Mall is an upscale mall in Mission Valley in San Diego, California, featuring San Diego’s finest collection of stores in a beautiful outdoor shopping center. The shopping center is the largest mall in San Diego and one of the largest in California.
Well pleased with the living wall, Simon Properties (the owners of the Mall) are said to be exploring opportunities to feature the VGM Green Wall at their other facilities.

Stamford American International School

Location

279 Upper Serangoon Road, Singapore

Specifications

To provide the drainage under-layer beneath the artificial turf of the sports field to be installed on the RC rooftop of the car park of the International School.

Solution

The RC surface of the car park rooftop was protected by a waterproofing membrane and then covered with a geotextile fabric. Following this, 6034 sq m of VersiCell® sub-surface drainage cells were connected into a massive continuous mat over the geotextile to provide the base drainage layer beneath the artificial turf. A further geotextile layer was then laid to blanket the VersiCell®, onto which the artificial turf panels were rolled out and installed and the necessary field markings created. A cushion of 25mm of sand and 15mm of Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) rubber were mechanically spread over and eased into the artificial turf to complete the installation.
VersiCell® enables water permeating through the artificial turf and fine sand and SBR rubber layers to be transported expeditiously to drainage outlets at the perimeter of the field. This efficient discharge of water enables the field for various sports, including American Football and soccer, to dry out quickly after heavy rains.
The new school offers an advanced learning environment incorporating world-class learning facilities with the latest in classroom technology and IT infrastructure that will establish it as the new benchmark for international schools around the world. The school can cater to up to 2,500 students in Nursery through Grade 12 from diverse racial backgrounds spanning 40 nationalities
