Specifications

To provide the Green Roof system to facilitate planting on the existing metal roof tops of the main building as well as the adjacent buildings at this address.

Solution

Elmich Green Roof was chosen because it is light and easy to install.
VersiCell structural drainage/insulation cells were used to fill the space between the metal ridges of the metal roofs, providing a ventilation layer and also creating a level flat surface. A separation sheet and geotextile was laid on top followed by installation of VersiDrain 25P drainage and water retention trays.

A filter fabric is positioned over the trays and EnviroMix GR, a lightweight and primarily inorganic planting media, installed on top for the planting of selected drought-tolerant plants.
An automated irrigation system is incorporated on the roofs for use during the initial plant establishment and to deliver water in prolonged periods of drought.

HDB Car Park Roof @ 309B Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 – Singapore

Location

HDB Car Park Roof @ 309B Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 – Singapore

Specifications

To provide the green roof system including the lightweight planting media to convert the roof of the existing car park into an accessible and aesthetically pleasing green amenity area.

Solution

The green roof uses VersiDrain 25P to provide water retention and drainage, and a geotextile filter fabric to retain the lightweight planting media.

VersiDrain 25P keeps the manicured lawn on the roof well irrigated and thriving during dry spells, through delivery of stored water via evaporation and capillary action. It also prevents water logging after heavy rain by facilitating drainage of excess water. The green roof also provides thermal insulation, reducing the transference of heat from the roof to the car park level immediately below. The trays also offer protection to the waterproofing membrane, a root-resistant fully adhered layer of Evalon PVC/EVA terpolymer membrane, prolonging its serviceable life.

The green roof enhances urban aesthetics as residents in the vicinity get to enjoy the view of a cool soothing green roof instead of an exposed hot concrete roof. Additionally, in a highly urbanised HDB estate, the green roof mitigates urban heat island effect to keep the surrounding ambient temperature down.

HDB Car Park Roof @ 180 Edgefield Plains

Location

HDB Car Park Roof @ 180 Edgefield Plains – Singapore

Specifications

To provide sub-surface drainage beneath planted areas on the intensive green roof as well as protection for the waterproofing membrane.

Solution

VersiCell® drainage modules were installed to provide a drainage cavity beneath the geotextile filter fabric layer and the planting soil above. Its open surface design and high internal void enables VersiCell® to rapidly capture and transport excess water after heavy rains, preventing the roof from becoming waterlogged.

High compressive strength allows its use under the trafficable and the heavy load-bearing areas of the roof. Additionally, the modules also provide a protection layer for the waterproofing membrane, prolonging its serviceable life.
The landscape roof mitigates urban heat island effect by sheltering the car park roof from the sun, reducing surrounding ambient temperature. Transference of heat to the car park level immediately below is also consequently reduced. The landscaped roof installed, with numerous large and shady trees, resembles a wooded country garden. It is aesthetically pleasing and provides additional shaded amenity and recreational space for the residents in the vicinity to enjoy.
The landscape roof also offers environmental benefits by acting as an air and chemical filter. Stormwater runoff is filtered at source, prolonging its residence time, thus alleviating downstream flooding.

HDB Hub Exhibition Gallery

Location

HDB HUB Exhibition Gallery – Singapore

Specifications

To install indoor green wall panels along the spiral stairway leading from the basement gallery to the building’s first storey.

Solution

Elmich Vertical Greening Modules (VGMs) were pre-planted in a nursery environment with plants suitable for indoor green wall installation. This ensures that the plants are firmly established and sufficiently pre-oriented to growing out of a vertical environment. The VGMs are anchored onto pilasters secured along the wall of the spiral staircase to form poster-like green wall panels.

A drip irrigation system is incorporated in the system and drainage trays placed below the base of the panels to collect and channel excess water. Artificial lighting, installed on the opposite facing wall and directed at the grren wall, provides the plants with adequate light for healthy plant growth.

The green wall poster-panels help to publicise the Housing Development Boards efforts in promoting the greening of Singapores public housing estates.

Marina Bay City Gallery

Location

Marina Bay City Gallery – Singapore

Specifications

To provide two indoor green wall panels in the City Gallery, behind the reception counter and the Marina Bay table model.

Solution

Elmich Green Wall System was specified for this project. About four months before the system was scheduled to be installed, pre-planting using the Vertical Greening Modules (VGMs), geotextile bag and soil-less lightweight planting media was done at a nursery. This allows firm establishment and pre-orientation of specially selected indoor plants to a vertical format prior to installation. On site, the VGMs are secured in metal support frames and mounted onto pilasters fastened to the wall.

A drip irrigation system is incorporated in the system and a drainage gully installed at the base of the walls to collect and channel excess water. Artificial lighting is provided above the walls to provide the plants with an adequate source of light for healthy plant growth.

A distinctive design feature of the green walls is the flat beams on the walls that artistically connect the lines formed by the supporting pillars of the second floor. This creates a visual flow of lines between the first and second floors.
