Elmich Landscape Roof
6,000 sq m of VersiCell® drainage modules were installed beneath the geotextile filter fabric layer and the planting soil above. The drainage cavity created enables rapid transport of excess water to drainage points on the roof, preventing waterlogging at the planted roof decks, green balconies and planter boxes of the E-deck. Laid directly on the waterproofing membrane, the modules also provide a protection layer that prolongs the serviceable life of the membrane.
The landscape roof mitigates urban heat island effect by sheltering the car park roof from the sun, reducing surrounding ambient temperature and transference of heat to the car park below. Installed with large shady trees and resembling a garden park, the living roof provides additional amenity space. The landscape roof also played a pivotal part in the precinct clinching Singapore’s first Green Mark Platinum Award Public Housing Project.

Stephen Riady Centre NUS Utown

Location

College Avenue West, Singapore

Specifications

To provide root-resistant waterproofing on the rooftop of the building
To provide the Landscape Roof system for intensive green roof installation

Solution

Eurathane 1200 SPE
Waterproofing protection for the roof skin beneath the green roof was provided by Eurathane 1200 SPE, a solvent-free plural component spray-applied polyurethane elastomer waterproofing coating. The fast curing polyurethane coating is UV-resistant and root-resistant with excellent tensile properties; suitable for intensive green roof applications.

Elmich Landscape Roof
A total of 1,500 sq m of VersiCell sub-surface drainage modules were connected into continuous mats carpeting the waterproofing membrane at the two rooftop levels of the building. This provided a void beneath the planting media that enables expeditious transport of excess water to drainage outlets at the perimeter of the intensive green roof. A non-woven geotextile filter fabric placed over the VersiCell allowed a 100mm sand layer to be spread on top followed by the soil media for planting. The efficient discharge of excess water provided by the VersiCell sub-soil drainage layer prevents the green roof from getting waterlogged.

The eye-pleasing Elmich Landscape Roof decks offer additional amenity and informal learning spaces on the rooftop of the Stephen Riady Centre and also environmental benefits that contribute to a more sustainable built environment at the National University of Singapore (NUS) University Town (UTown).

The green roofs play a major role in the award of the BCA Green Mark Platinum to the Building which in turn contributed to the BCA Green Mark for Districts Award being awarded to UTown and NUS clinching the ultimate BCA Green Mark Champion Award.

Stamford American International School

Location

279 Upper Serangoon Road, Singapore

Specifications

To provide the drainage under-layer beneath the artificial turf of the sports field to be installed on the RC rooftop of the car park of the International School.

Solution

The RC surface of the car park rooftop was protected by a waterproofing membrane and then covered with a geotextile fabric. Following this, 6034 sq m of VersiCell® sub-surface drainage cells were connected into a massive continuous mat over the geotextile to provide the base drainage layer beneath the artificial turf. A further geotextile layer was then laid to blanket the VersiCell®, onto which the artificial turf panels were rolled out and installed and the necessary field markings created. A cushion of 25mm of sand and 15mm of Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) rubber were mechanically spread over and eased into the artificial turf to complete the installation.
VersiCell® enables water permeating through the artificial turf and fine sand and SBR rubber layers to be transported expeditiously to drainage outlets at the perimeter of the field. This efficient discharge of water enables the field for various sports, including American Football and soccer, to dry out quickly after heavy rains.
The new school offers an advanced learning environment incorporating world-class learning facilities with the latest in classroom technology and IT infrastructure that will establish it as the new benchmark for international schools around the world. The school can cater to up to 2,500 students in Nursery through Grade 12 from diverse racial backgrounds spanning 40 nationalities
A “green” design with modern athletic and recreational facilities complements the school’s child centered philosophy of stimulating and developing a lifelong love of learning and encouraging students to become true global citizens.

To provide the sub-surface drainage at the base of planter boxes situated above the underground car park at the entrance to the Gardens. (VersiCell®)

To provide the slope stabilisation web on the slopes around the perimeter of the Flower Dome at the Gardens to protect and allow planting on the steep slopes. (VersiWeb®)

Solution

Gardens by the Bay consists of three distinct waterfront gardens – Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central, set in the heart of Singapore’s new downtown Marina Bay, adjacent to the Marina Reservoir.
Spanning 101 hectares, Gardens by the Bay is an integral part of a strategic plan to transform Singapore from a ‘Garden City’ to a ‘City in a Garden’. The aim is to raise the quality of life by enhancing greenery and flora in the city. The Gardens have been designed with the environment in mind, adopting environmentally sustainable technologies and is intended to be a statement in sustainable engineering and energy efficiency.
VersiCell® modules were installed at the base of the planter boxes above the underground car park to provide sub-surface drainage. The fully mature luscious trees and shrubs form a green horse-shoe shaped curtain surrounding the central coach and bus parking area above the underground car park.
The Flower Dome is the larger of the two conservatories at the Gardens, at 1.2 hectares. It replicates cool dry conditions and features permanent displays of plants found in the Mediterranean and semi-arid tropical regions. There is also a display field to enable flower shows and non-permanent displays to be exhibited within the Conservatory.
VersiWeb® slope stabilisation webs installed over the perimeter slopes of the Flower Dome serve as slope stabilisers and also provide media containment to make planting on the steep slopes possible.

Solaris @ Fusionopolis

Location

Fushionopolis Walk, SIngapore

Specifications

To provide the Landscape Roof system for planting the perimeter landscaped ramp, sky terraces and rooftop of the building to create recreational space and also offer protection for the waterproofing membrane and assist in the collection of rainwater for recycling.

Solution

About 10,000 sq m of VersiCell® drainage modules placed directly over the waterproofing membrane of the planted areas, provide the drainage cavity beneath a geotextile filter fabric layer and the planting soil above. It prevents the roof from becoming waterlogged and ponding after heavy rain. The drainage modules also provide a protection for the waterproofing membrane, prolonging its serviceable life.
The sum of the vegetated areas of this building exceeds the footprint of the site on which it sits. The uninterrupted 1.5 kilometer long spiral ramp, with a minimum width of 3 m, runs from ground level all the way up to the rooftop, expanding into spacious sky terraces as it rounds each corner of the building. These skyrise green spaces create areas for relaxation and event spaces and allow occupants of the building to interact with and experience nature.
Water discharging from the sub-surface drainage modules is channeled to drainage downpipes at the perimeter ramp and also the roof via siphonic drainage and stored in tanks. A storage capacity of over 700 m3 allows for over five days of irrigation of the building’s extensive landscaped areas via recycled water between rainfalls
Solaris was awarded the Green Mark Platinum rating, the highest level of certification granted by BCA’s Green Mark, Singapore’s sustainable building benchmark.
