Shell Petrol Station @ Tampines Avenue 2

Shell Petrol Station @ Tampines Avenue 2

Location

9 Tampines Ave 2, Singapore 529731

Specifications

To provide a green wall system for a sustainable petrol station.

Solution

The green walls were constructed using Elmich’s VersiWall GP green wall products. Approximately 100 VersiWall® GP (VGP) Proprietary Mounting Panels were installed onto 4 different walls of varying sizes across the station, covering a total area of 55.1m2. The Mounting Panels facilitates easy mounting of approximately 1300 VGP Trays. Trays are connected to an irrigation system which uses harvested rainwater to sustain the plants, allowing for low maintenance care of the living wall system.

To prevent against accidental dislodgement, the VGP are fitted with anti-lift arms, effectively locking the trays to the mounting panel. The modular green wall system is made from fire-resistant thermoplastics which will not burn, release toxic emissions, or smoke when a fire is present.

The trays are then planted with 3 varieties of shade loving plants, Philodendron ‘Gold’, Dracaena reflexa, and Epipremnum aureum. The varying shades of green on the plants create a layered look that brings an added dimension of depth to the walls.

Early Learning Village

Location

1 Lorong Chuan, Singapore 556818

Specifications

To provide a fire-resistant green wall system for establishment of green facades around the school campus.

To provide a fire-resistant pedestal system for raising floor slabs of the classroom‘s balcony.

Solution

The Early Learning Village is a collaboration between the Australian International School and the Stamford American International School.

VersiWall® GP

Elmich VersiWall® GP (VGP) was used to establish multiple green walls totalling approximately 151 square metres on Australian International School’s campus in Singapore.

Over 4500 VGP trays were used in the installation of green walls around the campus. Each green wall consists of rows of VGP2060 trays hooked onto VGP mounting panels via 3 pairs of anchor hooks, ensuring the stability of the system.

The trays used are of the fire-resistant version, which enhances the safety of the plant-filled wall. VGP adheres to building code regulations, as well as the Singapore Fire Code requirements set by the SCDF for toxicity emissions, smoke density, and fire spread.

VersiJack®

10,000 VersiJack® pedestals were installed to create raised paver areas in the balconies of classrooms. The void created beneath the paver platforms allowed miscellaneous services to be hidden.

Archifest 2018

Location

Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza, Singapore

Specifications

To provide a drainage layer for event space to prevent ponding during heavy rainfall.

To provide community green benches for sitting.

Solution

VersiCell® was used to create a flooring platform for the Archifest 2018 Event Pavilion at Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza. A total of 1000 pieces of VersiCell were used to create a 250m2 area, after which a layer of sustainable material made of bamboo charcoal was laid over as the finishing.

To create the community green benches, 9 VersiTank® 553 modules were joined together in a 3 by 3 configuration. VersiDrain® 60 was affixed to the top of the modules and filled with carpet grass to create a comfortable and natural bench for Archifest visitors to rest on. The open nature of the event space meant that our community green benches were exposed to rain. The drainage capabilities of the VersiDrain® 60 allow the turf to stay dry and functional for sitting.

A total of 9 sets of community green benches were created and installed around the event area.

Datacom Office, Auckland New Zealand

Location

Auckland, New Zealand

Specifications

To provide a fire-resistant and modular green wall system to add a green aesthetic to the decor of the office.

Solution

Elmich VersiWall® GT (VGT) was used to establish multiple living walls in Datacom’s new office in Auckland, New Zealand. Manufactured from fully recyclable anodized aluminium, the VGT system is extremely durable and fulfils fire safety requirements for indoor green walls.

Each living wall consists of rows of hook-on pilaster systems attached to the backing wall, onto which the modular trays and irrigation system hook on. The trays are then fastened in place with coupling bolts, preventing the trays from being dislodged accidentally. The modular nature of the VGT allows its extruded pilasters and trays to be easily cut to any length to fit any design requirements.

An irrigation system was easily installed and inconspicuously slotted through the irrigation channels of the pilasters. This allows the piping to be hidden behind the plants, ensuring a fully green aesthetic.

Skool4Kidz Campus @ Sengkang Riverside Park

Location

3 Anchorvale Crescent, Singapore 544618

Specifications

To provide a lightweight, extensive green roof system for a curved roof.

Solution

Extensive green roofs have a shallow profile which means that there is less substrate volume to store water and support root growth, limiting the variety of plant options.  Also, a curved roof structure would represent challenges such as the retention of water for healthy plant growth and soil retention.

Therefore, Elmich’s Enviromix® PB, a lightweight organic planting board enhanced with nutrients that are beneficial for healthy plant growth, was selected as the optimal choice for the greening of the curved roof due to its lightweight and erosion-proof properties.

The modular and flexible planting board is easy to handle and install, simply by abutting against each other, with minimal loose media for installers to deal with. The high water absorbency and retention properties of the planting board help to slow down stormwater runoff during periods of high rainfall. In prolonged dry spells, a drip irrigation system helps to maintain and sustain the green roof.

To enhance the drainage capabilities of the green roof, Elmich’s VersiCell® drainage cells were placed underneath the planting boards and beneath a layer of geotextile. VersiCell® provides effective drainage of excess water to prevent waterlogging that would add to the structural load of the roof.

Twelve different plant species were used. Namely, Sphagneticola trilobata (wedelia), Cyanotis cristata, Portulaca grandiflora, Ipomoea pes-caprae, Callisia repens, Euphorbia tithymaloides, Hemigraphis repanda, Tradescantia pallida, Russelia equisetiformis, Russelia equisetiformis aurea, Russelia equisetiformis ‘salmon pink’ and Russelia equisetiformis ‘yellow’.

Besides helping the rooftops to aesthetically blend with the lush greenery of the park, the green roof serves as an insulation barrier for the campus, protecting the waterproofing membrane of the roof as well as reducing heat absorption, bringing down the school’s cooling energy costs.
