The City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government completed a $2.5 million project to retrofit a green rooftop on the Old Treasury Building at 1 Treasury Place, East Melbourne. The project aims to address industry knowledge gaps and barriers to green roof adoption while bolstering the case for implementing more green roofs across Melbourne and southeastern Australia.

Evergreen Infrastructure constructed the 700 m2 rooftop garden using Elmich Green Roof Systems, which include VersiCell® (drainage cells), VersiDrain® 30 (water retention and drainage trays), and MEP® Tray (modular extensive planting trays). Automated irrigation systems were incorporated for regular water delivery to the vegetation. Construction commenced in June 2024 and was completed in August 2024.

This demonstration of a green roof retrofit provides an important case study for the built environment sector, particularly for landlords, developers and the construction industry, to understand how they can design and build low-cost, successful green roof retrofits.
