Elmich conducted a “Green Wall and Green Roof Systems” seminar attended by 78 interior design students from Raffles Design Institute (Singapore) on 25 July 2016.

As urban density continues to increase across cities all around the world, the biggest challenge is to balance the natural and urban environment. This is especially crucial for land-scarce Singapore, to find integrated urban solutions to create a green living environment. With this in consideration, Elmich familiarises the students about the types of greening systems and the possibilities of its usage so that the students can incorporate green wall and green roof designs in their future projects.

Guest speaker, Mr Thor Jia Wei informed students of the benefits of vertical and rooftop greening, such as thermal insulation, cleaner air, noise insulation and reduced surface runoff. This was followed by a detailed explanation of the different systems available for constructing green walls and the safety considerations for installation as well as the importance on maintenance, indoor lighting, irrigation and plant selection.

Students were introduced to the concepts of an extensive and intensive green roof system, as well as its special considerations with illustrated case studies of the system’s various applications.

At the end of the seminar, Mr Thor opened the floor to questions. Students shared their thoughts about the seminar being beneficial as it serves as an eye-opener to urban greening. One of the students mentioned that she will spread the knowledge gained during the seminar to her native country.
