Specifications

To provide the system to establish a 25 sq m free-standing green wall against the exterior wall of the Pharmacy between Blocks 4 and 5 of the Singapore General Hospital (SGH)

Solution

Anchoring pilasters of the VGM Green Wall system were bolted to free-standing metal pillars erected along 12 m of the wall of the Pharmacy fronting the courtyard. Vertical Greening Modules (VGM), each containing a geotextile bag filled with EnviroMix® GW, a primarily inorganic soil-less lightweight planting media, were pre-planted in a controlled nursery environment 2 months prior to installation. The pre-planting ensures firm establishment and also allows the selected plants to be orientated vertically.
The completed installation creates five 2.5 m high green wall panels running along the façade of the Pharmacy. The living wall provides a visually appealing, therapeutic and healing environment at the Courtyard enjoyed by recuperating patients and their visitors and also the hospital staff.
The mural of living plants acts as a sun screen that helps to lower ambient temperature at the Courtyard and also render the interior space of the Pharmacy comfortably cooler. In addition to achieving the design objectives to provide a cool and “green” retreat within the hospital grounds, the living wall also plays a part in environmental sustainability.
