The Lycée Francais de Singapour (LFS) has expanded rapidly since it was founded in 1967. When the French school of Singapore moved to its current site at Ang Mo Kio, the campus was designed to accommodate 1,000 students. Over the past years, student numbers were increasing constantly and eventually the Executive Committee had to make a decision to build a bigger campus to cater to this growing student population.

It was decided that an extension of the current campus will be constructed over three phases. The first phase designed to accommodate 3000 students was completed in 2015. The second phase designed to accommodate 3500 students by 2020 and the final phase designed to accommodate 4000 students by 2025.

Landscape architecture firm, Sitetectonix incorporated 3 green roofs totalling 1,200 square metres to benefit not only the environment but also the students who are having their classes conducted in the same building. Green roofs have excellent noise attenuation, especially for low frequency sounds, creating a peaceful study environment for the children. Moreover, the greater insulation offered by green roofs can reduce the amount of energy needed to moderate the temperature of the school and on a greater scale, moderate the Urban Heat Island effect.

Elmich VersiDrain® 25P was specified as part of the green roof system to store and facilitate the efficient discharge of excess subsoil water. During dry periods, it reduces irrigation frequency by allowing water and soluble nutrients stored in the cells to be returned, via evaporation and capillary action, to the planting media. During wet periods, it prevents water-logging as large holes in the channels allow excess water to be efficiently drained away.

With the building industry highlighting more on sustainable green building, Elmich is glad to be a contributor to this movement and there is no better way than advocating for green roofs on educational facilities where our future generation prepares themselves for what lies ahead.
