Specifications

To provide percolation and infiltration tanks to facilitate filtration and infiltration of stormwater before it is discharged into the local storm drain network and eliminate requirement for visible surface concrete drains to facilitate drainage in the children’s play areas at the Waterfront Promenade.

Solution

Large pits were excavated within the designated areas where playground features are to be installed in the compound of the waterfront park. The bottom of each pit is compacted and leveled with a layer of coarse sand and lined with geotextile.

VersiTank® units assembled on-site were then positioned in the pits and covered over with geotextile lapped and sealed at all joints to envelope each tank. The geotextile filter fabric permits rainwater to readily pass through and enter the tank below but ensures that solids, including mud and clay, are filtered and prevented from entering. Water which has percolated through into the tank either slowly infiltrates into the surrounding substrate or is channeled to connected pipes linked directly to the immediate drainage network for discharge.

The sides of the pits, the tops of the tanks and the area within the confines of the raised boundary of each playground shape are backfilled with coarse sand. The sand pits or dry ponds provide the permeable ground to accommodate playground equipment which includes slides and mini obstacles, swinging-planks and cargo nets, designed to bring out spirit of adventure and fun. The permeable sand dry out quickly and provide a soft and safe landing in inevitable falls and boisterous play.
